Stockport Digital Switchover Trial

Unlocking the Power of Partnerships: Driving the Digital Switchover Together

As the telecare landscape evolves, partnerships have never been more critical. Working collaboratively, TSA, Virgin Media O2, and Stockport-based Carecall have been at the forefront of ensuring that the transition from analogue to digital telecare services is smooth and effective - showcased recently with a highly effective and groundbreaking analogue to digital migration trial in Stockport.

The collaboration is built on the understanding that we cannot continue with the status quo. The nation's ageing copper-based telephone network is increasingly outdated, with replacement parts becoming scarce and failure rates on the rise. The digital switch needs to happen — and it needs to happen now.

Stockport’s Digital Switchover Trial: A Collaborative Success Story

The recent trial in Stockport stands as a testament to the power of equal collaboration. By joining forces, TSA, Virgin Media O2, and Carecall demonstrated that the digital migration process can be both seamless and efficient when organisations work together towards a common goal.

The results showcase how working together can overcome challenges in both the analogue to digital and Digital Voice switchovers. The Stockport trial is a prime example of what can be achieved when all partners play an equal role in driving change. The outcomes of the trial highlight what’s possible - Read the full case study here.

- 90% of migration appointments were successfully secured, showcasing the strength of collaboration between telecoms providers, local authorities, and trusted telecare services.

- For 17% of cases, securing appointments required involving next of kin, support workers, or arranging welfare visits — demonstrating the support achieved through joint efforts.

- By the trial’s end, 96% of all appointments led to a successful migration of both landline and telecare services.

- The remaining 4% of cases, due to customer health complexities or unavailability, are being carefully reassessed by the collective team.

Lessons from Stockport: Setting a Blueprint for the Future

The Stockport trial not only delivered impressive results but also set a benchmark for how collaboration can drive success.

At the heart of this effort was a data-sharing agreement between Stockport Homes and Virgin Media O2, enabling efficient identification of telecare users to ensure no one was overlooked. This agreement was a collaborative effort, demonstrating the strength of equal partnerships in achieving impactful results.

Following the trial, Virgin Media O2 has reached out to other local authorities across the UK, encouraging them to establish similar data-sharing agreements. Yet, to date, over 80% of local authorities have yet to engage.

This is a call for more organisations to join this collaborative effort — because together, we can overcome the challenges of the digital switchover.

Spotlight on Vincent’s Story: A Case Study in Action

In the midst of the digital switchover, stories like Vincent's demonstrate why a smooth transition to digital technology is so vital. Vincent, 85, relies on his telecare alarm, landline, and broadband for both safety and staying connected with loved ones.

When the shift to digital began, Carecall’s independent living officer and a field engineer from Virgin Media O2 came together to ensure that his critical lifelines were upgraded smoothly.

Vincent’s journey highlights the real-life impact of these efforts. Read the full case study here.

The Clock is Ticking: Prepare for the Digital Switchover

The shift to digital isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a necessity. The current analogue network is becoming rapidly obsolete, with failure rates increasing as replacement parts become harder to find. The urgency is clear: the digital switch cannot wait. This is a call to action for telecare providers, local authorities, and housing associations to engage now, as delays will only heighten the risks associated with an outdated network.

However, the journey to digital isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. TSA, Virgin Media O2, and Carecall are committed to working with each organisation to tailor their Analogue-to-Digital (A2D) strategy. Whether through tailored guidance, dedicated support, or involvement in future trials, the partners are ready to assist. If you’re interested in joining the next trial, reach out now to ensure your organisation is not left behind.
